Discover the Magic of Light
The Full Catalogue is available from our catalogues pages.
To begin, we require an incredible artist. That would be Christina. In order to take the picture in her mind and get it transformed into a reality, she starts with a preliminary sketch, which then turns into a piece of art in itself. These drawings are the key to show her various participating engineers and artists in the factory exactly what they will be doing in the process.
Most often we see artist sketches in small scaled detailed drawings. In order to make certain that each artist understands what is asked of them, Christina's drawings are either at full size or in some cases, larger than life.
Kinda hard to miss a twist and curl that way!
Founder and head of design,
Christina Spann gives you, as the designer, the opportunity to add your own personal touches, such as size, shape, color to the glass, metal and fabrics, giving your signature to your project.
Let's get close up and personal with the
LODI Wall Sconce
Artists use copper wire and mesh metals along with the various sizes and colors of crystal Glass Frit.
This glass is completely hand made at the factory. It involves Fusing and Slumping in state of the art kilns.
There are different types of fixtures available, from wall to pendants.
This glass is hand made of recycled crystal and hand painted to the soft hues of Sienna.
This is an example of very fine precision wrought iron work, bending, curling and twisting until it is as Christina intended.
Silks and Acrylics
Some of Lightspann's custom drum fixtures give the designer a wide array of fabric and Acrylic colors and textures to work into the design.
Ice Sorrento is the newest Drum design launched by Lightspann. It consists of the combination of Fabric Shades and Blown Glass with the addition of a fabulous "twice fired" Ice Crystal bottom Diffusser.
For sure, the bottom diffusser was intended to make us re-define the drum suspension fixtures. This wall make you think differently about a "drum" fixture!
It is currently on display in the Policelli Showroom.
Plated Finishes
On plated hardware you have choices of 5 standards and you may request custom painted finishes as well.
How is it created?
Take a brief journey along with us, as we look behind the scenes in the factory and discover how this magic is performed. (keep in mind, we never said it was "easy")
After meetings and discussions of understanding....that's when the team work begins.
Each design could incorporate any of the following art forms.
Computor Record Keeping
Putting Christina's drawing on file will assure accuracy for future orders.
After all, we do want to make another one.
Recyling
Christina uses recycled crystal to re-make the glass for some of her products, breaking down large chunks of recycled crystal, spreading the varied size frit pieces onto magic textured shelves, placing it over moulding forms, heating it to fusion temperatures, drilling and coldworking the resulting piece to the desired creation, and then hands it off to her team of fine artisans to hand paint to the hues of color to meet your pallet.
Wrought Iron
Lightspann utilizes fully hand wrought iron and then rubs the finished product with tints of copper, gold, black, silver. Patina finishes on brass or steel, involve special chemicles and controlled fire, heat and sealers.
Electrical...(Not Shown) Let's not forget, we need sockets and wire to "illuminate".
Fire and Brimstone?
That's about what it takes to get to the finished product.
Bending Iron is no easy task.
It takes iron, fire, machinery and
really big gloves to do this part of the job.
Grinding is needed
to smooth out the welds and bends to give it that quality appearance and look like those drawings by Christina.
Mouth Blown Glass
Other Lightspann designs utilize blown glass shades. Christina utilizes the masterful work of several local glass blowers, each with their own unique abilities in the art of glass blowing.
A master of glass blowing needs years of training and practice to be successful, and they need to be able to take the "heat". Mixing chemicles for color, applying the power of mouth forced air, and the abilty to reproduce the same effects each time comprise one half of the challenge. The second half is being able to do this all, while you face the high temperatures of the kiln fires.
Cuckoo?
One does not have to be cuckoo to work at Lightspann. That's the name of the fixture being worked on in the pic to the left.
Starting with a pure steel spinning, the bowl is cut by laser, and the openings are then filled with colorful chunks of crystal glass, dicroic glass and polycarbonate filters.
That's just the beginning. There's more.
You can see the entire Cuckoo's Nest at the Policelli Showroom.
One doesn't need to be cuckoo to work there either, but it helps!

Lightspann is not for everyone.
Each creation is a work of art in itself, and
is an artform intended for those who believe
that their lumiere should be a piece of art
that can stand the test of time, and
not to be considered
"just a light"!
